Moving On, Burning Out, and Building Up

Here’s what we’re listening to this week.

ABA Journal Asked and Answered: “Should I Stay or Should I Go? When Partners Should Make a Lateral Move”

It is tough for lawyers to evaluate whether switching firms is the best choice—both for themselves and for the clients they serve. For this month’s Asked and Answered, the ABA Journal’s Stephanie Francis Ward sat down with Karen Kaplowitz. Kaplowitz is a former BigLaw rainmaker turned business-development consultant. Her work focuses on working with partners after a firm merger and in this podcast she shares hints about how to best serve your clients after a big move.

Sincerely, X: “Dr. Burnout”

TED has a new original audio series, Sincerely X, that focuses on talks from people who have to hide their identity but have stories that need to be heard. This episode features a doctor who says she made a fatal mistake with a patient. That mistake led her to a disturbing realization: the medical field encourages professional burnout.

How I Built This: “Burton Snowboards—Jake Carpenter”

How I Built This is hosted by Guy Raz and focuses on innovators and entrepreneurs and tells the stories of the things they build. For this episode, Raz talked to Jake Carpenter, founder of Burton Snowboards. Carpenter invented his company and his ride by himself in a barn in Vermont in 1977 while trying to improve on the Snurfer, a stand-up sled he loved as a kid.
