Your Practice Mastered

Your Practice Mastered

Your Practice Mastered, formerly known as Automated Business Results, is the flagship program by Richard James to help entrepreneurial-minded attorneys looking to maximize their efficiency and serve their clients at the highest level without working 90-hour weeks.

Your Practice Mastered Highlights

Free content and consultation. You want to make sure you’re selecting a training program that best suits you and what you want from the program. To help you make this decision, you should look over the free content offered by training programs and consultants. With Your Practice Mastered, there are numerous free resources, tools, trainings, books, and other content with lots of useful tips for you to use before you even reach out to them for more information. If you really like what you see, you can reach out to them for a free consultation.

Built through experience. The techniques, systems, and skills taught through Your Practice Mastered are battle-tested and proven true. Richard James developed the course from his own personal experience of building a law firm from the ground up. The numerous testimonials from people who have already taken the course show that its system is effective for those who are willing to put in the work.

Partners Club. Partners Club is a private membership primarily for those who have already completed the Your Practice Mastered programs. The Partners Club connects you with like-minded attorneys through its proprietary dashboard and puts you into groups of 12-15 attorneys to keep each other to task. You’re given daily, weekly, and quarterly activities to constantly improve your practice, and are given direct guidance and leadership from Richard James.

Your Practice Mastered Pricing

Pricing will vary depending on the program and consultations you are interested in. You will need to reach out to Your Practice Mastered to get more specific pricing details.

Things You Might Want to Know

Your Practice Mastered. This flagship program will take about a year for you to complete. You will get a project to work on each month to help you develop the systems you need to create the practice you want. Then, to help keep you on track, Your Practice Mastered connects you with other attorneys in the program. You will also have access to Your Practice Mastered’s Senior Law Firm Analysts to help you with anything you’re having difficulty with on any of the tasks or projects during the course.

Not a coaching program. Your Practice Mastered and Partners Club are not coaching programs. These are training and consulting programs to empower you to help yourself. While you will have ample support as you go through the flagship program and while in the membership group, it won’t be the same as having a coach. Mr. James designed his program so that this exclusive group of like-minded entrepreneurial attorneys can help each other. If you’re looking for more of a coaching program, Your Practice Mastered isn’t for you.

Regular doses of activity. If you’re looking for a more passive program, this isn’t it. You will be given daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and even yearly challenges to complete. This is a program that requires dedication and commitment to change and improvement.

Systems, automation, and work-life balance. The philosophy in these courses is clear: you should build your law firm based on systems. Doing that effectively should help you support your lifestyle. In other words, this course is built to get you out of your business, not to dive in more deeply or maximize revenue generated from it.

Who Your Practice Mastered is For

If being forward, putting yourself out there, and dedicating some time to work on your practice, rather than in your practice daily sounds daunting, this program and its approach won’t be a good fit for you. Attorneys who are more entrepreneurial-minded may benefit most from this program. If you’re not sure, check out some of Richard James’ free materials on his website. If the material, tips, and style sound great to you, check them out! If you’re still not sure, reach out for a free consultation to see if this would be a good fit for you.

Solo Practice University

Solo Practice University

Solo Practice University, founded by Susan Cartier Liebel, is an online collection of courses that help you with the practice of law. The sessions are pre-recorded so you can watch and listen to them at your convenience, with new classes added regularly. She started Solo Practice University after her experience teaching a course called How to Hang a Shingle Right Out of Law School at Quinnipiac University School of Law. Lawyers and law students alike can learn the nuts and bolts of starting, running, and maintaining a law practice from the convenience of their home.

Solo Practice University Highlights

Convenience. Solo Practice University’s collection of pre-recorded online courses means you can learn at your own pace on topics like marketing and management, work-life balance, technology, and substantive legal courses.

Faculty moderation. Classroom and teacher interaction is always a challenge with online courses. Solo Practice University offers faculty-moderated study groups and forums and access to all faculty to help facilitate student interactions and to help you get more out of your courses.

Start blogging. With your Solo Practice University subscription, you also have the option to create your own private or public blog or website with a custom domain. Solo Practice also offers hosting services and support from an experienced website developer in case you run into any snags while blogging.

Solo Practice University Pricing

Solo Practice University offers two pricing tiers.

The monthly pricing option is $245 for the first month, then $65 per month after that. This tier provides unlimited access to all published courses, unlimited community participation, unlimited blogs and websites, and discounts on their products and services.

Its semi-annual pricing is $445 per six months and offers everything the monthly pricing offers, plus a free law practice management consultation.

Solo Practice University also offers discounts for bulk pricing and for law students.

There is no free trial, but it does offer some free sample classes.

Things You Might Want to Know

Consultations with subscription only. If you want to schedule a private one-on-one consultation with someone from Solo Practice University, you need to sign up for a semi-annual level subscription. You cannot purchase their one-on-one consultations separately.

Discounts on products. Subscription to Solo Practice University comes with discounts on books, insurance, law practice management products, and professional services, including law practice management software and virtual receptionist services.

One of many MOOCs. Massive open online courses, or MOOCs—like Edx or MIT OpenCourseWare, among many others—may offer classes similar to what you’re looking for with Solo Practice University. This is particularly true for substantive legal courses or management courses. Those courses usually are not catered to legal professionals specifically, though. Still, if Solo Practice University’s pricing seems steep or they don’t have a session on something you’re interested in, it’s worth exploring the MOOC option.

Who Solo Practice University Is For

If you already know what you want to learn, and know you want to do it at your own pace without the pressure of assignments or deadlines, Solo Practice University might be a good fit for you. Take a look at the course list to see if they are a good fit for you.

Lawyers With Purpose

Lawyers with Purpose

Lawyers with Purpose helps elder law and estate planning attorneys make their practices more efficient while also helping them find their chosen work-life balance.

Lawyers with Purpose Highlights

Their drafting software includes training and live support with an on-staff attorney to help you get the most out of the software. If you’re interested only in the software and not its program, sign up for a free 30-minute demo to see if the drafting software is right for you.

Different focus for different folks. Whether your interest is in creating a more efficient and profitable practice, a purpose-driven practice, or a business you hope to sell, Lawyers with Purpose has programs and coaching to help you get to where you want to be.

Live TAPER event. Lawyers with Purpose holds a Twice-annual Practice Enhancement Retreat (TAPER). It is a live event held (yep, you guessed it), twice each year. Each event has a unique focus and helps you improve your practice and your client service. For its next TAPER event in October 2018, they will even offer to pay up to $800 of your travel fees if you book before August 31, 2018. If TAPER doesn’t sound like your thing, Lawyers with Purpose has other live events throughout the year.

Lawyers with Purpose Pricing

Lawyers with Purpose offers two separate pricing tiers for their membership program.

The Bronze tier membership is $397.00/month, which includes systems, software, and base membership. The Bronze tier also offers a discounted price on the Tri-Annual Enhancement retreat at $2,297/person.

The Gold tier gives you systems, software, base membership, and implementation. This tier also includes free registration for up to three people for the tri-annual practice enhancement retreat. This tier, as you may have surmised, sets you back a little more at $1,297/month.

Things You Might Want to Know

Systems focused. Lawyers with Purpose understands that many lawyers struggle to be effective entrepreneurs. Part of that difficulty, they have concluded, comes from not having systems in place. Lawyers with Purpose helps you find systems that work for you in your practice to help you make the most out of your time.

Secure Member Site. All the tools, systems, materials, and checklists you get from your membership will be available on a secure member’s site that stores what you need on a secure cloud system. The site includes tools to help you with client management, relationship management, and marketing, and includes their client-centered software. You can also sign-up for live training, coaching, and implementation through the website.

Free resources.  Selecting a coach or training program can be a big time and money investment. To get a better idea whether a particular program is good for you, take a look at the free resources the coach or program offers. Lawyers with Purpose offers many free tools, resources, and tips on their blog to help you see if it fits you well. If you’re not sure, reach out for a free consultation.

Who Lawyers with Purpose Is For

Lawyers with Purpose is for elder law and estate planning attorneys seeking to create an efficient and profitable client-centered practice that doesn’t swallow 80 hours of every week. Attorneys looking for more automation in their practice, particularly in document drafting, will benefit from this program more than attorneys who already have systems in place.

Rosen Institute

Rosen Institute

For attorneys frustrated with plateauing or stagnant practices, the Rosen Institute helps you implement systems, make your law business more efficient, and catalyze your search for more high-quality clients. The Rosen Institute was founded by Lee Rosen after his experience building a thriving law practice that he managed remotely before selling it (so he and his wife could travel full-time). Through the Rosen Institute, he claims to have helped over 10,000 attorneys build booming practices that don’t take 90 hours a week to manage.

Rosen Institute Highlights

Rosen’s Rules. To help you get a taste of what the Rosen Institute can do for you, Lee offers a free 10-day online course called Rosen’s Rules that teaches you his essential tips to grow a successful practice. The website also features a number of helpful and free resources, like how to implement flat fees in your practice, how to outsource your work, and how to migrate to a new on-brand email address if you don’t already have one.

Free podcast and articles. If you’re still debating whether this program is a good fit, the website hosts a trove of articles and podcasts on many different topics for your review. Even if you decide not to give it a try, you’ll still learn something useful about law practice management.

Teaching from experience. Lee Rosen is an attorney and a coach. Everything you learn during your membership program is based on his experiences, successes, and failures from his own practice. Having someone who has practiced what he preaches can help you avoid some common mistakes on your journey.

Rosen Institute Pricing

Rosen Institute’s Premium membership isn’t for everyone. We mean that literally. In order to be eligible for membership, you have to complete a questionnaire, after which someone will contact you to learn more about what you want out of your practice.

If you’re accepted, membership is $169/mo.

Things You Might Want to Know

The other Rosen Institute. There is another Rosen Institute. That one is for bodywork and movement professionals using the so-called “Rosen Method.” If you’re into that, maybe you can check out both Rosen Institutes. If you’re not, look for the dotcom, not the dotnet.

Focus on members. Lee Rosen takes what he does seriously. He declines speaking engagements as a matter of policy so he can better focus on the Rosen Institute’s premium members. Dedication like this is great for Premium members (and inspiring), particularly given the excellent reputation he and his institute has cultivated over the years.

Practically focused. Rosen Institute focuses on giving you practical goals, systems, and solutions, and encourages you to look at new ideas (and then execute on them). Rosen Institute wants to provide you with solutions that will leave you feeling confident, productive, and inspired. In short, they want to provide you with solutions that actually work.

Who Rosen Institute Is For

Rosen Institute is for lawyers who feel motivated and ambitious but stagnant and overwhelmed in their practice. There is a definite focus on generating new clients with higher revenue and boosting law firm management efficiency, and through those two strategies, achieving your chosen work-life balance. If this sounds good to you, and you also want a community of like-minded attorneys, reach out to learn more.

Law Firm Management Coaching, Training Programs, and Bootcamps

Coaching and Training

Maybe your law practice is everything you ever dreamed of and more. But if you’re like most lawyers, you’ve got some spots where you would benefit from some help. Maybe it’s time to hire a law firm coach or join a law firm training program to help you reach your goals.

Have you been thinking about how to grow your practice (but you just can’t seem to unlock the “secret”)? Have you dreamed of automating parts of your intake process to give you some more free time (but you don’t know how)? Maybe you’re even feeling a bit stuck or down on some part of your practice. If you’re not sure about your next steps—or haven’t stayed accountable to your goals—use this practical guide to find a law firm coach, training program, or boot camp to help get you out of your rut.

How to Select a Law Firm Coach or Law Firm Training Program

Why do you want a coach or training program? This is a critical question. Many law firm coaching, law firm training sessions, or law firm bootcamps require an investment of at least a few hundred dollars. If you just want to just learn something or you aren’t sure about your goal, you might be better with a CLE course. But having a goal in mind, even if it isn’t very specific, is an important first step to finding a coach or training program. If you know generally what you want (to grow your practice, maximize your revenue, or find better work-life balance, for example), your search will be more likely to be successful. Some coaches and programs focus on one particular competency or skill or outcome. By knowing your goal, you can narrow your list to the right genre.

What kind of personality do you prefer? Do you prefer a more serious, straight-forward approach? Or a casual, light-hearted approach? Maybe a mix of the two? Working with your coach or taking a training course is a big commitment. You want to work with someone that inspires, supports, and encourages you and holds you accountable to your goals, but not someone that annoys you. Get an idea of your coach’s personality by reading their blog or any reviews you can find about them, or looking for video or other materials that can give you a glimpse behind the coach’s curated persona. When you find yourself engrossed in a video or blog that someone has poured their time and energy into, you’ll know you’ve found someone you can work and connect with.

How much do you want to pay? Law firm coaching and law firm training can get expensive. Some programs offer free trials or low-cost trials so you can see if you like the approach. This expense as an investment in your business, so you need to know how much you plan to invest. Be wary of programs that demand large fees up front but don’t offer a free initial consultation or money-back guarantee if you find yourself in the wrong environment.

How and when do you want to learn? Do you prefer working with someone in-person? Over the phone? Online? Some programs are available as on-demand courses, some have live (but remote) training, and others offer in-person get-aways. Think about the time commitment you’re ready to make, what flexibility you need (and how you hope to balance flexibility with accountability), and how you prefer to interact with the program. You only get out what you put into it, so know how and when you want to put in the work with your selected program.

Measuring Value

Many programs will provide their own ROIs to help you gauge your growth and success. Are you getting more clients? Are you spending fewer hours and the office? Is your revenue increasing? These are good, quantifiable questions to measure the value of your coaching program. But there are also intangibles. How do you feel during and after your sessions in the program? Do you feel inspired? Do you feel like you are moving in the direction of the original goal you wanted coaching for in the first place?

If at any time you answer the above questions in the negative, let your law firm coach or consultant know right away. They have a right to know their program isn’t working for you and will want to help you improve. And you have a right to feel like you’re receiving value for the program you’re investing so much time and money in. Remember, these programs are here to help you improve your practice and achieve your goals.

How to Get the Most out of Your Sessions

As with every expense in your business, you should try to maximize the return on this particular investment. So how do you get the best return on your investment in a coach or training program? Here are some obvious ways to squeeze the most value out of your sessions:

Prepare. This is a no-brainer. The more prep work you do ahead of time the more you will get out of each class or session. Each class covers something new and different, so take time to learn about it so you can get the most out of it.

Speak up and lean in. Ask questions. Get involved. The more you engage the more you learn, so let’s get interactive!

Understand limitations. Coaching sessions aren’t a panacea for any fundamental issues you might have with your job. You already know this: there is only so much a class or coach can do for you.

It takes time. What you learn from your sessions takes time to apply. It takes more time after that before you see results. Don’t expect miracles to happen overnight.

Take responsibility for yourself. A good coach helps you unlock your best you. But a law firm coach can’t and won’t do all the work for you. You’ll need to put in the effort during your sessions, of course. But you’ll also need to bring what you’ve learned back to your business implement it. If aren’t accountable to yourself by putting what you’ve learned into practice, you cannot expect to see real and tangible results. But you can do it! We believe in you!

microphone with caption "lawyerist/legal talk network" below

In this episode, we talk with Jim Sheils about why family sometimes falls to the wayside as a busy working professional, and how to balance success at work with success at home. We also talk about a few ideas you can implement in your family and work life to help keep a balance between the two.

You can get Jim’s book, The Family Board Meeting here. An updated version of the book will be out later this summer and will expand the language and application of the original book to make it accessible for everyone.
