ABA Journal Asked and Answered: “You’re in a Pickle. Can a Lawyer Assistance Program Help?”

In this episode of Asked and Answered, Stephanie Francis Ward talks with Bree Buchanan, the director of the Texas Lawyers Assistance Program (LAP) of the State Bar of Texas. Programs like the Texas LAP guarantee confidentiality when a lawyer reaches out to them about a substance abuse problem. They discuss how entering recovery and showing a commitment to getting better can be a mitigating factor if a lawyer is facing disciplinary charges. You’ll learn more about how LAPs work and how a lawyer can reach out for assistance when they need it.

By the Book: “The Secret”

For the past year, comedian Jolenta Greenberg and her friend Kristen Meinzer set out to explore which, if any, of all those famous self-help books might actually be life-changing. Every two weeks, they live by the rules of a different self-help book. They kicked things off by trying to follow The Secret, a new age tome about manifesting your thoughts into things and following the Law of Attraction. They also tackle the minimalist bible, aka The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, try to live according to the dictates of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, and more.

Uncivil: “The Raid”

Gimlet Media’s new history podcast, Uncivil, covers stories that were left out of the official history of the civil war. Learn about resistance, covert operations, corruption, counterfeiting, mutiny, and more. Hosts Chenjerai Kumanyika and Jack Hitt connect those lost struggles to the politics of today. “The Raid,” the first episode of the series, is about the most ambitious covert operation in the Civil War, run by a group of ex-farmers, a terrorist from Kansas and a schoolteacher.
