Lawyerist is a community for small-firm lawyers to learn from each other, support each other, and have fun while building successful, client-centered law firms. Our goal is to inspire ideas and encourage lively discussions that fuel growth. To this end, we have established a variety of spaces for lawyers to engage with us and each other, such as the comments on Lawyerist.com, Slack workspaces, Facebook groups, TBD Law events, meetups, email, and more.
To participate in those spaces and the Lawyerist community, here’s what you need to know.
Engage!
First of all, in order to get the most out of any community, but particularly this one, engage! You can only learn so much from passive participation. We’d love to get to know you better, and so would the other lawyers in the community. Don’t be shy!
If you aren’t sure how to participate or whether something is okay, just ask us. Send us a message, either directly or by using our contact page.
While we try hard to promote engagement, every once in a while we will remove a comment, usually because it is not coherent, relevant, or respectful.
Be Coherent, Relevant, and Respectful
Coherent. Lawyerist is a community of professionals. Please communicate like one, in complete sentences and thoughts.
Relevant. Please try to stay on topic. If the forum allows for it, start a new discussion instead of hijacking an existing one. Also, please keep in mind that the Lawyerist community is international, not local to you and your jurisdiction.
Respectful. Follow the Golden Rule: treat others the way you would like to be treated. As part of this, please don’t use our community to promote yourself, your firm, or sell your products.
Also, if there are additional rules in the space in which you are participating, follow them. We don’t have a lot of rules, so when we do add one we expect it to be followed.
We Are Inclusive
Given the above it should go without saying, but we don’t want to leave any room for doubt: we will not tolerate harassment or discrimination. Everyone has the right to respect no matter their gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, race, ethnicity, or religious beliefs.
Catchall: No Assholes
On the one hand, assholes isn’t very specific. On the other hand, it has never been a hard line to draw. And, fortunately, it has been rare that we needed to. Chances are if you are worried you might be perceived as an asshole, it’s time to apologize and try another approach before you become one for sure.
Reporting Violations
If you witness a violation of these standards, contact a Lawyerist employee, either directly or by using our contact page. You can also go straight to Aaron or Sam.
In some cases there may be a built-in reporting function. For example, our Facebook groups include the option to report inappropriate posts and comments. We will monitor those complaints and act on them as quickly as we can.
